Abstract

The increasing adoption of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI) is transforming the nature of work, employee roles and human resource management practices across organisations. Deposit Money Banks are particularly affected because their operations involve extensive information processing, customer interaction, documentation, decision support and knowledge-intensive activities. However, the extent to which Generative AI contributes to employee productivity may depend on how effectively organisations manage workforce transformation. This study examined the relationship between Generative AI and workforce transformation and proposed an AI-HRM framework for improving employee productivity in Deposit Money Banks operating in Rivers State. The study specifically examined the relationships between Generative AI and employee reskilling, job redesign, human–AI collaboration and employee productivity. A cross-sectional correlational research design was adopted. Data were collected from employees of selected Deposit Money Banks operating in Rivers State using a structured questionnaire. Reliability was confirmed using Cronbach’s Alpha coefficients above 0.70. Out of 344 questionnaire administered, 300 usable copies were retrieved and use for the analysis with the aid of SPSS version 27.0. The findings suggest that Generative AI should not be viewed merely as a replacement for human labour but as a technology capable of augmenting employees’ capabilities and transforming the way work is organised and performed. The study therefore proposed an AI-HRM framework based on AI readiness, Generative AI adoption, employee reskilling, job redesign, human–AI collaboration and productivity improvement. The study concludes that Deposit Money Banks can achieve greater productivity benefits from Generative AI when its adoption is supported by appropriate HRM practices, continuous employee development and effective human–AI collaboration. The study contributes to knowledge by providing a context-specific AI-HRM framework for managing workforce transformation and improving employee productivity in Deposit Money Banks operating in Rivers State.
